Chapter 19
Veronica was grateful that she would not have to work with Grace anymore. "That girl drives me crazy," she stated to the radio. "I don’t know what it is about her, but she does not know how to handle an interview. This whole idea of having a conversation is so lame. She does not get to the meat of the interview by having a conversation."
She was not use to having to work with anyone other than herself. She liked the idea that she was a loner and that she did not depend upon anyone because she didn’t need them. The only person that she need was herself and it had not hindered her at all in all of her years as a District Attorney.
She knew that she needed to stop focusing on what was not working and what was working on this case. Instead she should focus on the information that needed to be gathered from Xavier School for the Gifted and Talented.
It was not until she had found out that the school was located in Connecticut, that she knew that it was a school for the gifted and talented. She hated the fact that there were schools out there that catered to these types of people. Everyone deserved to have the equal opportunity of education. She knew that public schools were not always for everyone but it had not been bad for her as she was the head of her class and had gotten into Harvard without any trouble.
She finished getting packed for the trip this morning with William. She did not like that she was still being asked to work with another person, but she knew that it was a necessary evil. When you are asked to be part of a task force, it is required that you have to work with others. It does not mean that she needed to enjoy it, but she did not get try to get along. It was not going to be easy but she knew that she would have an easier time working with a man than she did with working with Grace.
When Veronica and William met at the airport at 6:30 in the morning it was apparent that they were both ready to work. William had his laptop with him so that he could take notes as they were going along on their trip. Veronica was grateful to see that it appeared that he wanted to work together rather than being apposing forces.
"I am so glad that we get a chance to work together," Veronica stated to William.
"Yeah, it should be nice to get out of Grangeville for a while. I am sick and tired of all of the murders that are happening here. I moved here to get away from all of this.
Veronica was taken back. She had not expected to have this type of response from him. She had just wanted to express that she was grateful to be working together and instead, it appeared that he wanted to give her his life story. She wanted to nip this in the bud.
"I am so glad that we have a three hour flight, I hardly got any sleep last night." Of course this was a lie. She had slept wonderful knowing that the Chief of Police was actually listening to what she had to say about this case. She just wanted to make sure that William knew that she was expecting to get some sleep rather than to speak with him.
"That is fine," William said. "I was expecting to get some work done on my laptop anyways. I just wanted to have some small talk until the flight started to board. If you don’t want to do that, I will just go down to the magazine shop and pick myself up a magazine."
With that William headed towards the shop and left Veronica unable to believe that he has been so curt with her. She had always had a way to woo the men and it would appear that it was not working with William. Maybe she had lost her touch. Oh well, she figured that she might as well just make the best of the alone time and to start thinking about what type of questions they should be asking once they arrived at The Xavier School.
She wanted to make sure that every one of the victims had attended the school. She believe that this theory was the one that was going to make a big name for herself. She would be seen as a much better D.A. if everyone knew that she was an expert in the field. No longer would she be looked down upon, instead everyone would look up to her. She would finally be in the spotlight where she always had belonged.
Once the plane started to board, William and Veronica made their way towards the terminal it became apparent to Veronica that William was not comfortable having to travel by plane. She reached out a hand to his shoulder, "It will be okay William, they are perfectly safe."
This appeared to give him some sense of relief. She was not sure why he was acting so strange, but there had to be a reason. There was no need to get into it as long as he would be able to get on the plane and not freak out. She hated when people acting crazy against something that they had not control over.
When they got on the plane, William asked if he could sit on the aisle instead of the window, Veronica really didn’t care and gave up her seat to him. As they got settled into their seats and the plane started to taxi out to the runway, William started to sweat. He finally got himself under control once the plane was in the air. Veronica really wondered what brought this all on, but they had a murder investigation that needed to take priority over everything else.
Instead of sleeping William and Veronica spoke about all the different aspects of the investigation. Both of them agreed that it appeared to be a crime of premeditation and of passion. Whoever was doing this, actually had some sort of vendetta against these people. There had to be some sort of connection between each of these victims and they were both bound and determined to find out what those connections were and how they could stop it.
It was agreed that they both needed to completely focus on this case and put everything else behind them. They decided that they needed to work together and not try to compete against each other. After William heard about the way that the two women tried to work he decided that. They could not be in competition with each other. They needed to be completely focused and not allow anything to get in the way. They had to find "El Diablo" before he struck again.
